[★] THE ONE NON-NEGOTIABLE

Fushimi Inari before 8am on Day 1. It is by far the most impactful single experience in Kyoto and costs nothing. Set the alarm — the first JR departure from Kyoto Station toward Nara leaves around 5:20am.

Day 1: Eastern Kyoto

06:00
Fushimi Inari Taisha
90 min JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station → Inari Station, ¥150 (5 min) Free

Start at Fushimi Inari before the crowds arrive. Walk the lower torii tunnels, hike to Yotsutsuji junction for city views, return by 8am. See the Fushimi Inari guide for the full breakdown.

09:00
Kiyomizudera & Higashiyama Walk
3–4 hours Bus or taxi to Kiyomizu-michi ¥500

The morning window 9–11am is ideal — tour groups arrive later. Budget 60–75 minutes inside the temple, then walk downhill through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka to Yasaka Shrine.

See the Higashiyama walking guide.

13:00
Lunch + Gion Afternoon
3–4 hours ¥1,200–¥1,800

Lunch in the Gion area (obanzai sets recommended). Then walk Hanamikoji and Shimbashi — the streets at the heart of Kyoto’s geisha culture. Quieter in the afternoon when midday tour groups have cleared.

Optional: Nishiki Market, 15 minutes west.

18:00
Dinner in Gion or Pontocho
Walk from Gion ¥3,000–¥8,000

Reserve in advance for anything mid-to-high range. The maiko-sighting window (5–7pm on weekdays near Hanamikoji) comes just before dinner — position yourself accordingly.

Day 2: Western & Northern Kyoto

07:30
Arashiyama — Bamboo & Temples
4–4.5 hours JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station → Saga-Arashiyama, 17 min ¥500 (Tenryu-ji)

Bamboo grove before 9am, then Tenryu-ji garden, Nonomiya Shrine, and Togetsukyo Bridge. If time allows: Jojakko-ji temple or Okochi Sanso villa.

See the Arashiyama district guide.

[★] BOAT RIDE

Hozu River boat trips from Arashiyama are worthwhile in clear weather (¥4,100, 16km descent through gorge, runs March–November). Book at the pier — they fill up on weekends.

13:30
Northern Kyoto: Kinkaku-ji + Ryoan-ji
2.5 hours Bus from Arashiyama (~50 min) or taxi ¥500 + ¥600

Kinkaku-ji (¥500) takes 30–40 minutes — a one-way garden circuit. Then walk or taxi 10 minutes to Ryoan-ji (¥600) for the famous 15-stone rock garden.

18:00
Dinner near Nijo or Gion
¥2,000–¥4,000

Central Kyoto has excellent mid-range dining along Kawaramachi and Teramachi streets. This is also a good evening for our Gion Sake Walk if you haven’t booked it yet.

Day 3: Central Kyoto or Day Trip

Option A: Central Kyoto

09:00
Nijo Castle
2+ hours Tozai subway line to Nijo-jo-mae ¥1,300

One of Kyoto’s most underrated sights. The nightingale floors, 800 Kano school paintings in Ninomaru Palace, and UNESCO-listed garden deserve 2+ hours.

11:30
Philosopher's Path & Nanzenji
2.5 hours Free (Nanzenji main grounds); ¥500–¥600 (sub-temples)

The Philosopher’s Path (Tetsugaku-no-Michi) is a 2km canal-side walk lined with cherry trees — spectacular in late March/early April. Walk north from Eikan-do to Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion, ¥500) or south to Nanzenji.

Nanzenji (free main grounds) has an aqueduct and several sub-temples worth exploring.

14:00
Nishiki Market + Final Shopping
2 hours Walk or bus from Nanzenji area ¥500–¥2,000

Nishiki Market for lunch, then Kyoto Imperial Palace Park (free, vast) or final shopping in the Kawaramachi covered arcade.

Option B: Nara Day Trip

45 minutes by Kintetsu Limited Express from Kyoto Station. See the Nara Day Trip guide. Recommended if temples and deer are priorities; combine with keeping Day 2 afternoon for Kinkaku-ji.

[i] NARA TIMING

Arrive at Nara by 9am before the tour buses. The deer are most active in the morning, and Todaiji temple is less crowded before 11am. Return to Kyoto by 4–5pm to leave the evening open for Gion.

Shorter trip? The 2-Day Kyoto Itinerary cuts this down to the essentials. Day trips: Osaka, Nara, and Uji are all easily reached from Kyoto.

Evening walk: Our Gion Sake Walk runs nightly — a guided 2-hour evening through Gion with sake stops. Book for Day 1 or Day 2 evening.

FAQ

Is 3 days enough to see Kyoto?
Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit. You can cover the major sights at a comfortable pace, fit in a day trip to Nara or Arashiyama, and still have time to explore neighborhoods without rushing. Most first-timers leave wishing they had four or five days.
What's the most efficient order for 3 days in Kyoto?
Day 1: Eastern Kyoto (Fushimi Inari, Higashiyama, Gion). Day 2: Western Kyoto (Arashiyama) + Northern (Kinkaku-ji/Ryoan-ji). Day 3: Central sights (Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, Philosopher's Path/Nanzenji) or a day trip to Nara.
Should I use a Kyoto subway pass for 3 days?
A standard IC card (Suica/ICOCA) is more flexible than day passes for most itineraries — passes only pay off if you make 5+ trips in a day on qualifying routes. The Kyoto City Bus Day Pass (¥700) is worth it on days with heavy bus use.
What is the one thing I must do in Kyoto?
Fushimi Inari before 8am. It is by far the most impactful single experience in Kyoto and costs nothing. Everything else is open to preference.
